Joseph McManners: Sally Gardens

Date Added: Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:45pm

The photos are from Joseph's official website. The artwork is all from www.JononathonArt.com, by Jonathon Bowser.

"Down by the sally gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the sally gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears"

The lyrics are by William Butler Yeats. I'm working on this song with my voice teacher at the University of Montevallo.

The first few verses sound like a poem by W.B. Yeats

Gorgeous voice _ a wonderful rendition. I like the accuracy in the performance. The only thing that I don't like so much is one of the chords in the background, sounding at :14, ;50, and 1:00, if you know what I mean. Cello; that's good _ very good!

can someone gimme the lyrics?

Posted by raigekimaru on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 5:23am
both versions are nice, but I don't think it's really possible to compare a boy soprano and an operatic contralto.

I'd dress like that in a heart beat if I could get the dresses. o3o

Beautiful, as always...

They can, and a few do... Probably most have been "liberated". Besides, it is hard to find such dresses in the stores. You'd have to sew them yourself. Another thing few do... Of course, I prefer my shoulders to be covered.

Of course a beautiful song, perhaps lacking the feeling of Maura O'Connell's rendering (she really can't be bettered). But aren't the women just perfect? Why can't today's women dress like that?
